Another Speedweeks has come and gone. It always makes me a bit sad when it's over even though NASCAR is a shadow of what it once was and our interest has waned considerably over the last 15 years. We still have the memories of Speedweeks past to draw from and how excited we were as it drew nearer. Remembering the '79 race and as a young child not knowing at the time just how much that race changed things for the Daytona 500 forever. Finally making it to Daytona in February and how cool it was to see guys like Parsons, Allison, Foyt, Baker, Pearson, Cale and The King even though all of those guys were well past their prime at the time I watched them race in the 500 for the first time. How exciting the guys solidly in their prime but didn't quite have the star power yet, guys like Gant, Elliott, Bonnet, Rudd, Labonte, Waltrip, Richmond and Wallace were to watch. Those were the days when looks, marketing and money were not prerequisite's and secondary in comparison to being real racers with skill and courage to make it to Cup. Besides that all of the aforementioned drivers had manners, class and dignity. Lord knows none of those things are required in today's NASCAR and that's what is the most saddening.
We no longer go to Daytona in February anymore and haven't for sometime now. Not because we aren't able for any reason, just have better things to do. But we did watch all of the ARCA race, the last few laps of the truck race, the last 35 laps of the Xfinity race and the start of the 500 and the last 29 laps. It seemed it was all about the same with the outcome directly influenced by bone headed moves by drivers making their bone headed moves with just a handful of laps left. NASCAR is dying right before our eyes and there seems to be no one who can step up and prevent the ship from foundering.
Well, at least the short track racing we watched on internet PPV was good.
Whew!!! Now that we've got that off our chest we can go back to making fun of limp dik jerk off's. I really wonder how many of those assholes are still around! LOL!
