So......we hit the road at 6:40 AM...2 drivers, one 'cheerleader' and 2 babies in tow.....along with a trailer with 4 cars for 3 drivers - the nephew met us there....
.....novice school starts at 8 and Wil is on the track by 8:05 with a throttle stop as low as it can go....hits the track at 9 with just a bit more.....then hits the track at intermission @ 1 with a bit more again.......did a nice job.....including his first two spins.....seems to like it so far....
regular racing started at 10:30 and Travis hit the track around 11:30 for his first heat ever in the Heavy Honda division.....raced his way up to third from 9th.....and was catching the leaders when his best bud started battling him for position......took the white flag only about 10 feet behind the leaders --- the top points getters for the last THREE YEARS in whatever division they've been in --- 10 feet from the line - his buddy takes him out!!!!! *sigh* one unhappy but not angry driver gets out of his car to find his buddy waiting to slap him on the back and tell him 'sorry'......
A-main line-up gets posted - best bud was 'called' for the move - but Travis was not given his position back as he was unable to get across the finish line.....so he starts in 9th AGAIN for the A.....he's cruising along when this kid decides to start 'chopping' him (this kid took out the top driver earlier in the day and, while she was on her side, kept the gas floored - unfortunately, no one had real proof and so, they let him keep driving - fortunately, she was just fine, so was her car - and they uprighted it, put her back in, and, well....as I said, Travis was working on the top 2 cars when his buddy caught him).....anyway.....the kid keeps cutting Travis off - so he finally turns the wheel slightly left as the kid cuts across his front bumper --- OOPS --- off goes the other driver through the grass.....another parent looks down at me and says "well, mom, that looked intentional"....and I said, "well it sure did, didn't it....think the kid got the message?"...."what if he gets put to the back?" "Fine with me - he needs to stand up for himself and he just did!"....well, the judges found that the other kid didn't give 'racing room' and called it on him....While Travis didn't do fantastic in the end - finishing 7th in the A-main out of 10 cars - he DID stay on the lead lap with those top drivers (just about a first for him) - he also lapped this problem kid and the two drivers with him....he was only a turn behind the leaders.....to put it another way --- they know he's there and they know he's coming --- and all of this was with 3 year old right side tires!!!
Trevor started off his day great.....for the first 10 laps of his heat he was in the top 4.....then the car fell off a bit and he ended up 7 out of 8 cars.....he came to the trailer and changed his right sides - complaining that the other ones heated up too fast.....he did this DESPITE several handlers and his father telling him NOT TO.....next time, he'll listen....he went out to the A-main and was not as fast - and the new tires got no heat in them....so he had no grip and spun out 3 times....to bring out 3 cautions --- 3 strikes and you're out.....so he finished 8th in the A-main....
But ... it's coming.....you can feel it when you look at them.....and those top drivers in their divisions were looking at them in a whole new light - you could see it on their faces that they know they have some new competition coming!!
Practice Friday night if the weather is right.....racing on Sunday again.....
Pictures to follow....
